Ski event in Finland's North cancelled: weather to blame

The opening event of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, slated for mid-November at the Levi ski resort in northern Finland, has been cancelled.
Competition General Secretary Mikko Saarinen said the lack of snow and mild forecast made the decision inevitable.

The international Skiing Federation will decide this weekend where the event will be held. Saarinen says a new venue will be difficult to find, because snow cover is poor or non-existent at ski resorts across Europe and Scandinavia.

In Schweden nimmt Rassismus gegen Sámi zu:

Destruction of property, racist websites and vandalism of Sami street signs are on the increase in Northern Sweden according to the Sami Centre Against Discrimination and Racism.
When obvious aspects of Sami culture, such as bilingual street signs, are vandalized it creates a climate of intimidation, say Lars-Nila Lasko, head of the centre against racism.

"It's increasing all the time. There are Sami people who don't dare to go out in the evenings in their traditional dress," he told Swedish Radio News.

Recently several traditional huts, or kåtor, used by Sami reindeer herders have been burned down, and the incidents have been registered as hate crimes.

The national Equality Ombudsman has also reported that the Sami minority in Northern Sweden often faces difficulty finding jobs due to discrimination.

Recently a Facebook webpage calling for the extermination of all Sami was closed down.

The Sami are an indigenous people of Arctic Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.

Da hatte ich ja vorigen Sommer nochmal Glück: Der einzige Bankautomat in Savukoski wird Ende des Jahres außer Betrieb genommen.
Die Bankfiliale bleibt, ist allerdings nur 12 Stunden pro Woche geöffnet.
Den nächsten Automaten findet man im ca. 40 km entfernten Pelkosenniemi.

Der einzige Bankautomat in Savukoski wird Ende des Jahres außer Betrieb genommen.

Den braucht man dort ja auch nicht, denn man hat ja den Weihnachtsmann.
