Best Picture award goes to Aki Kaurismäki's "Laitakaupungin valot"
At Sunday night's gala presentation in Helsinki of this year's Jussi Awards, the top prize for Best Picture of 2006 went to Laitakaupungin valot (Lights in the Dusk ) directed by Aki Kaurismäki.
Surprisingly, the award was handed out by French film director Luc Besson who is currently visiting Finland.
"I am a great advocate of European films", Besson commented.
The film Valkoinen kaupunki (Frozen City), directed by Aku Louhimies, had a very good night of it, and picked up five Jussis.
Valkoinen kaupunki collected the awards for Best Director (Aku Louhimies), Best Script (Paavo Westerberg and Mikko Kouki ), Best Editing (Samu Heikkilä), Best Actor (Janne Virtanen), and Best Actress (Susanna Anteroinen).
Originally Valkoinen kaupunki had received eight nominations.
Another film directed by Louhimies, Riisuttu mies (Man Exposed), which was recently banned as a result of a legal disagreement with the scriptwriter, brought the award for Best Supporting Actor to Mikko Kouki, who thus enjoyed a double success on the night.
The prize for Best Supporting Actress was snapped up by veteran Seela Sella for the film Kalteva torni directed by Timo Koivusalo. The People's Choice Award went almost overwhelmingly to The Dudesons, with nearly half of the total votes. The film was directed by Jarno Laasala.
