YLEFinnish Politicians Offer Mixed Reviews on EU Summit
Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen says he's pleased with the outcome of Portugal's EU summit. However, Chairman of Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Pertti Salolainen has taken a dim view of concessions made to Italy and Poland in the closing rounds of negotiations.
In an interview on YLE's morning TV programme, Salolainen said there is room for improvement in the EU's negotiating culture.
At the end of this week's defining EU summit in Lisbon, apart from a new treaty designed to reform the 27-member bloc, Italy gained the additional seat in the EU Parliament that it wanted, and Poland won the right for small states to delay EU decisions they consider to be unfavourable * -- just ahead of Parliamentary elections this weekend.
Speaking on YLE's breakfast current affairs programme Aamu TV, Salolainen deplored the tactics of Poland and Italy, which he saw as playing to the gallery of their respective local audiences. He said both countries have negotiated purely in the interest of scoring points at home, pointing out that the negotiating behaviour of Poland in particular has been driven by these considerations.
Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the marathon talks, saying that they proceeded in a positive spirit. "It was clear that a resolution needed to be reached and it was," he added. The Prime Minister said he felt that the ratification process would proceed more smoothly than it did three years ago.
