Finland's minister of the environment Paula Lehtomäki has given approval for an extension to a hotel complex in the Pallas-Ounastunturi national park, reports YLE.
She said the profitability of the hotel should be ensured in order to sustain tourism in the region.
Lehtomäki sailegislation to allow the hotel extension would not permit any further construction in the region.
Speaking in a YLE interview, she noted that objections to the proposal had been taken into account.
It's important to ensure the future of the hotel; the alternative, she noted, might be an end to tourism in the area.
Lehtomäki visited Pallas on Monday where she met with groups opposed to the scheme, by hotel owners Lapland Hotels for a major expansion of the site that would increase the number of beds from 130 to 500.
The Pallas Hotel has been given a special licene to continue its operations within the boundaries of the national park because it was completed before the park was established.
Environmental protectionists say the increasing number of visitors threatens to spoil the area. They say any legislative change could open the doors to similar expansion projects within the national park.
