Unemployment has declined appreciably in Finland. In April, the country’s unemployment rate stood at 7.2 per cent, against 8.6 per cent a year earlier, Statistics Finland reports. Compared with March, April's unemployment figure showed a decrease of 0.5 percentage points.
According to the Ministry of Labour Labour Exchange statistics, the number of new vacancies at labour exchange offices rose by almost a fifth compared to the year before. In all, 44,000 new vacancies were advertised.
The employment rate stood at 69.2 per cent, which was 1.7 percentage points higher than in April 2006. In total, there were around 2.5 million employed persons in Finland.
The employment trend has been most favourable among young people and those suffering from long-term unemployment. The unemployment percentage among the 15 to 24-year-olds was 20.5, which is 5.6 percentage points lower than in April the previous year.
There were still considerable regional variations. The rate of unemployment was lowest in the Province of Southern Finland (6.1%), and highest in the Province of Oulu (12.0%).
