Only Munich comes out ahead
19.2.2010
Helsinki comes in second in a study comparing the public transport systems of 23 European cities. The German city of Munich is the only one to come out ahead of the Finnish capital.
According to the study, put out by the Automobile and Touring Club of Finland, the city’s transport system allows for fast movement between the centre of the city and the outskirts, and neighbouring municipalities.
Transport connections with Helsinki-Vantaa Airport were also considered good.
Additional benefits were the fact that it is possible to buy public transport tickets by mobile telephone, and the fact that information on ticket machines was in several languages.
On the negative side, it was noted bus and tram stops cannot be easily used by the blind. There were no indicators of travel time at stops, and the next stop is not routinely announced on buses either orally or on a screen.
Of the cities in the comparison, Zagreb in Croatia got the worst ranking. The study was conducted by the automobile associations of 15 countries.
Transport connections with Helsinki-Vantaa Airport were also considered good.
Additional benefits were the fact that it is possible to buy public transport tickets by mobile telephone, and the fact that information on ticket machines was in several languages.
