16.08.2007
Ote – crystallising the essential

Could a young designer be faced with a more challenging assignment than designing a new range of glasses for Iittala? After all, the goal was to create a new alternative to such well-known classics as the Aino Aalto and Kartio ranges. Young Finnish designer, Aleksi Perälä, proved up to the challenge, however, and his new Ote range combines a fresh new style with a strong sense of respect for Iittala’s past traditions.

A glass is, in principle, a simple object, with a function unchanged for thousands of years. How can a designer bring something new to such an everyday item?

Aleksi Perälä describes his approach as evolutionary, rather than focused on maximising the wow factor.

“The design I’ve created for the Ote range contains many tried and tested features. Above all, I see the range as forming a functional whole, in which I’ve striven to concentrate on the essentials and eliminate everything unnecessary.

“The Ote range crystallises my take on evolutionary design. What’s most important, as I see it is, is to find a solution that can really carry a design forward.”

Idea – form – function
Aleksi Perälä’s Ote range embodies a strong sense of respect for the work of past classic Finnish designers; Kaj Franck is particularly close to Perälä’s heart. The Ote range forms a natural continuation of a design heritage extending back to the Aino Aalto range, created 75 years ago, and the Kartio range, due to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.

The underlying thinking that lies at the heart of the Iittala range – multipurposing and combinability – also informs Ote. Perälä’s answer to multipurposing lies in his creation of three sizes of glass: two tumblers (25 cl and 36 cl) and a 29 cl wine and general-purpose glass. All three sizes reflect the same basic approach.

“One of the starting points for the design was the stem, which I used to drive my ideas forwards. The much narrower bottom section of the wine glass works in much the same way as a traditional stem,” explains Perälä.

“I placed the head of the glass at a slight angle to the vertical to make the glass inviting and provide a good surface for holding the glass. This form gives the glass its character, and it also has a functional role, as it make the glasses easy to stack, which was one of my priorities.”

This distinctive aspect of the Ote design is repeated in all the glasses in the range, adapted to the size of each piece. The overall impression is of variations on an underlying theme. The end-result is a stylish and consistent range that meets everybody’s needs, from drinking milk, water, and juice to beer and wine. The glasses fit a wide range of hands and sit comfortably there.

The power of colour
In addition to its distinctive form, the Ote range also gets its dynamism from a carefully chosen selection of colours. Five earthy colours complement the Teema, Taika, and Origo ranges in particular. The depth of colour varies depending on the thickness of the glass, creating an attractive play of light. Perälä’s evolutionary approach works especially well here.

Overall, the Ote range can be compared to a good wine: full-bodied and smooth, rich in nuances, and one that goes well with a number of dishes, both everyday and festive, yet still with a decided character of its own. Thanks to the range of sizes and colours on offer, everyone can be sure of finding just the glass they need from the Ote range.

Product information:
Ote tumbler, 25 cl
Ote tumbler, 36 cl
Ote wine glass, 29 cl
All sizes are available in the following colours: clear, ultramarine, sea blue, sand, and moss green.

Meine Farbe. In Sokos etwas günstiger diesen Monat.
